The trunk of a cycad
The cycads are an extremely old division of the plant kingdom, thought to have arisen from ancient seed-ferns. They reached a height of prevalence during the Jurassic period of the Mezozoic era, when they dominated the environment both in numbers of species and of individuals. The Cycadceae are a sister group to all other living seed-bearing plants, and extant species are considered "living fossils".
